EO 14179: what it requires, and the records to keep
EO 14179 sets the current federal AI policy of sustaining US 'global AI dominance' and orders agencies to review and undo actions taken under the already-revoked EO 14110. It led to the July 2025 AI Action Plan and to OMB memos M-25-21 and M-25-22, which hold the operative agency duties.
01 / What it requires
What EO 14179 requires
White House advisers, OMB and federal agencies; it places no direct obligations on private companies.
- 01Develop and submit an AI Action Plan to the President within 180 days (named White House advisers).
- 02Review actions taken under revoked EO 14110 and suspend, revise or rescind those inconsistent with the order's policy.
- 03Revise OMB memoranda M-24-10 and M-24-18 within 60 days to match the policy (OMB Director).
- 04Provide available exemptions while revisions of conflicting EO 14110 actions are pending (agencies).
02 / AI work
Where it touches AI work
It is the policy root of the current federal AI rules for agency use and purchase. Compliance duties for AI systems come from the OMB memos it triggered, not from the order itself.

Optional evidence · where Planisphere fits
Keep a record anyone can check
When your team meets a duty, Planisphere can seal the event it reports as a receipt.
A disclosure shown, a review signed, a model change approved: the event your system reports.
The event becomes a sealed receipt, dated and attributed to whoever is signed in.
Paste the receipt into Verify. No account or key.
A record supports your compliance evidence process. It is not a legal finding or a certification. Systems that call Planisphere's gate API can also hold or refuse an action before it runs.
QUESTIONS
The questions that come next
Did EO 14179 replace the Biden AI executive order?+
Not directly. The Biden order, EO 14110, was revoked on January 20, 2025 by EO 14148. EO 14179, signed January 23, 2025, refers to "the revoked Executive Order 14110," sets a policy of sustaining US AI leadership, and orders agencies to review and undo actions taken under the old order. It places no testing duties on private companies. The binding agency duties are in OMB memos M-25-21 and M-25-22, which replaced M-24-10 and M-24-18 on April 3, 2025. Read the full answer
What is the AI Action Plan and does it create testing duties?+
America's AI Action Plan, released July 23, 2025 under EO 14179, is a set of more than 90 planned federal policy actions across three pillars, not a regulation, and it creates no testing duties for private companies. Its main effect on vendors is through federal purchasing, such as buying only language models judged objective, which OMB implemented in M-26-04 (December 11, 2025). Enforceable testing and monitoring duties for federal AI use come from OMB M-25-21's minimum practices for high-impact AI. Read the full answer
