Montana for legal AI workflows
Montana in legal AI workflows: what compliance requires, who asks for evidence, and the records to keep.
01 / State law
Montana's AI laws
| Law | Status | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Limit government use of AI systems | In force | Bars state and local government AI use for manipulation, discriminatory classification or most public-space surveillance; requires AI disclosure and human review of decisions affecting rights. |
| Right to Compute Act | In force | Government limits on private computing must be narrowly tailored to a compelling interest; deployers of AI-controlled critical infrastructure must keep a risk management policy (e.g. NIST AI RMF). |
| AI deepfakes in election communications | In force | Bars paying for or sponsoring election communications with deepfakes of candidates within 60 days of voting unless they carry a set AI disclosure; injunctions, damages and complaints to the Commissioner of Political Practices. |
| Disclosing explicit synthetic media | In force | Creates the crime of disclosing explicit AI-generated media of a person and lets the Department of Justice request information from certain entities. |
| Property right in name, voice and likeness | In force | Gives individuals a property right in their name, voice and visual likeness, including realistic digital depictions, with penalties for unauthorized commercial use. |

In a legal AI workflow
Montana passed a cluster of AI laws in its 2025 session: limits and human-review duties for state and local government AI use, a Right to Compute Act that restricts government limits on computing and requires risk policies for AI-controlled critical infrastructure, and laws on election and sexual deepfakes. The Legislature does not meet in 2026, so no new AI statutes were added this year; the next session starts January 2027.

Optional evidence · where Planisphere fits
Keep a record anyone can check
When your team meets a duty, Planisphere can seal the event it reports as a receipt.
A disclosure shown, a review signed, a model change approved: the event your system reports.
The event becomes a sealed receipt, dated and attributed to whoever is signed in.
Paste the receipt into Verify. No account or key.
A record supports your compliance evidence process. It is not a legal finding or a certification. Systems that call Planisphere's gate API can also hold or refuse an action before it runs.
